Workers' Rights

Mission: The mission of the D.C. Employment Justice Center is to secure, protect and promote workplace justice in the D.C. metropolitan area. Since our founding, the EJC has successfully used a combination of strategies to protect the rights of low-income workers, including legal services, policy advocacy, community organizing, and education. We believe that in securing, protecting, and promoting workplace justice for the most vulnerable among us, we raise the floor of workplace rights for us all.

What volunteers do:

Advocacy Team Volunteers:

  • Help produce campaign materials.
  • Organize workers and other volunteers to take action.
  • Testify before the D.C. Council.
  • Write letters to the editor.
  • Consult on legislative drafting.
  • Host house parties or phone banks, and participate in countless other grassroots advocacy techniques.
  • Assist with social media and graphic design.

Worker's Clinic Volunteers:

  • Use a structured intake questionnaire to interview workers about their workplace issue, summarize the interview for on-site Advising Attorneys, and relay the attorneys’ advice to workers.
  • Assist with writing demand letters and filing complaints with appropriate agencies or workplace supervisors.

Additional volunteer needs include: administrative assistance in the office, such as maintaining files and entering client information into our database; attorneys to take pre-screened cases; law students to work in our office as interns conducting client intake, research and some case work; paralegals for intake, research and case work; Spanish translators for client meetings and translating documents.

FYI:

Individuals interested in volunteering at the Worker's Clinic must complete a volunteer application, attend a training, and commit to volunteering at at least one session per month. Session times and locations listed here: http://www.dcejc.org/volunteer/.
